Emo Fashion Styles Misconceptions

As the emo culture becomes increasingly popular, it seems more and more people are developing stereotypes and misconceptions regarding emo style. Perhaps the most common mistake is that people associate anyone who chooses an emo look with a depressed state of mind. Emo is a means of personal expression, which involves getting in touch with one’s emotions. Some of these emotions may be negative, but that surely does not mean that choosing an emo style makes youdepressed, self-destructive, or suicidal.

Additionally, some people mistakenly identify emo style as “punk.” Although they share some common roots, punk style is somewhat different from emo. Punk seeks to defy societal norms in bold ways. In contrast, emo style seeks to show a person’s inner feelings through their outward appearance.

As such, it is frequently less drastic in terms of its non-conformity. Finally, many people seem to believe that adhering to one element of the emo style makes you entirely emo. Dying your hair black, for instance, is a personal choice and not always related to being emo. The same is true for wearing skinny jeans or canvas sneakers.

The Most Popular Emo Hairstyles for Boys

These popular ‘dos begin with hair being dyed black. Hair is also grown out to be somewhat longer than traditional male styles. This leaves room for one of the most popular emo cuts, where hair gains texture through the inclusion of shaggy layers. Emo boys also have the ends of their hair cut with a razor for an edgy, expressive look.

Great Emo Hair

Almost all emo boys wear bangs as part of their hairstyle as well. These bangs are left long and allowed to hang in front of one eye. They should be long and can reach as low as the bottom of your nose. Also, the most common looks feature straight bangs. So, guys with textured hair may need to get a flat iron.

Black Emo Hair

Finally, many emo guys style their hair with wax or gel to make it look purposefully messy. Sometimes, more effort is put in to create spikes, chunks, or other popular emo hair patterns.

Emo Music Trends

Emo Music

Music plays a vital role in the emo culture. For many emo youths, music provides a creative means of self-expression. Whether they are creating their own tunes or listening to emo bands, emo youths seem to be most comfortable in the musical setting. In fact, emo has developed into its own musical genre. With roots in punk and hardcore rock, emo music varies between soft and hard, slow and fast beats.

What makes music identifiable as emo, though, is not necessarily its composition. Rather, the lyrics play an important role. Emo music features lyrics that talk about the problems and challenges faced by emo youths in their daily lives. This ranges from family fights, broken hearts, loss of friendship, depression, and much more. The first bands were referred to as “emocore” and many came out of America’s Washington, D.C. region. However, the movement has since grown and many famous bands have legions of emo fans. Some of the most notable include My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Senses Fail, and Dashboard Confessional. Despite their devoted following, many emo youths have started to move away from such famous groups. They prefer more of the local, independent music scene. Emo bands can earn quite a following, though, and greatly impact the thoughts and feelings of their listeners.
