If you truly are supportive of individuals doing anything they choose as long as it does no one else harm, then you ought to be a liberal. Liberalism levels the playing field for people to have more freedom to do as they wish. You have inadvertently stated the exact reason I believe conservatism has more to do with allowing personal freedom than progressivism. I can tell, even by what little you have said, that you have no clue how authoritarian progressivism is.
It is progressivism that advocates forcibly redistributing wealth. Progressivism compels you to buy health insurance. Progressivism dictates social justice. These days, progressives want to tell you what kind of light bulb you can use. There is not any decision that can be made a progressive government is not interested in dictating guidelines for or out and out forcing a sole option on you.
Even when labeling something a freedom, it is an Orwellian term of art. Take pro-choice for instance. It sounds nice, right? A woman should have the freedom to do what she wants with her body? But there is no promotion of choice. The pro-life position is not only not given equal weight, it is a thoroughly demonized position . There is a prevailing notion even the father of a child on the brink of being aborted ought have no say. In the child’s fate. Where is the freedom of choice in any of that?
When it comes to practically all matters, progressivism only offers one option. The consequences of resisting are severe.
I am not naïve. I understand people of all political persuasions want as much power as they can get. But in my observations, I have seen ideologically progressivism wield its influence in a far more authoritative manner than does ideologically pure conservatism. I would rather take my chances with individuals choosing for themselves how to run their lives than be dictated to by a monolithic government. The latter is not a level playing field, I assure you.
